Logging in Winter across Kazakhstan

The Joint Stock Company “AK Altynalmas” is a company with a full geological, mining, and gold processing cycle. Gold-bearing ore is mined at nine deposits in Kazakhstan which are owned by the company.

JSC “AK Altynalmas” was founded in 1993. It is among the top three largest gold producers in Kazakhstan in terms of both precious metal production and resource base size. The company’s assets are located in four regions of Kazakhstan: Zhambyl, Karaganda, Abai, and Akmola regions.

Previously, the company engaged contractors to carry out this type of work. The acquisition of the Robertson Geo geophysical equipment has allowed the company to gain a new development vector and receive a positive assessment when calculating the economic efficiency of this type of work.

The Akbakai deposit, discovered in 1968, is a combined open pit and underground asset. An onsite training course at the Akbakay Mining and Processing Plant mine site in the Moyynkum District of the Zhambyl Region was conducted by a Robertson Geo instructor from their RG Academy. The geophysical logging suite was then put into commercial use.

Logging was performed in the open pit area of the gold mine using 3-Arm Caliper, High Resolution Acoustic Televiewer (HRAT)® and High Resolution Optical Televiewer (Hi-OPTV)® probes to solve geotechnical and structural problems, and enabled continuous inclinometry to be undertaken.

Borehole depths were in the range 75m – 140m with inclination up to 65 degrees. This logging equipment made it possible to replace the core orientation method minimising any errors in obtaining structural information.
