Acoustic borehole logging

Sonic or Acoustic borehole logging measures the travel times of elastic waves through the formation. From the travel times the wave velocities (P and S) are readily calculated, determining Poisson’s ratio. With the addition of density values small strain moduli can be directly determined i.e. Shear Modulus, Young’s Modulus and Bulk Modulus. P wave velocity data is also used to provide a calibration reference to convert surface seismic data from travel times to depth.
